Working with Bergen County, RSC Architects has planned and designed a new 75-bed homeless shelter to be located at the corner of East Kansas and River Streets in Hackensack, NJ. This new 25,000 s.f. facility replaces the existing homeless shelter and helps to alleviate the shortage of shelter beds in the county.

Our firm’s architects rose to the challenge of designing this much-needed facility on an extremely constraining site. The design solution creates a two-story, L-shaped facility that maximizes the area available on the site. This well-conceived design also fulfills the complex programming requirement of keeping the men and women’s areas separated. The new shelter will be constructed on the same site as the existing facility, allowing the existing shelter to continue to function without the loss of beds or services.

RSC Architects’ sensitive design of the new shelter not only complements its surrounding residential and commercial neighborhood, but also creates a welcoming, home-like environment with its warm interior colors and finishes. Upon occupancy of the new facility, the existing shelter will be demolished, making space for staff parking and outdoor and recreational areas for the residents.

Occupants of the new shelter will be housed in cheerful and comforting double rooms. Each floor will also feature bright and open day rooms, administrative and counseling areas. A main dining hall will provide common cafeteria-style food service for up to 140 patrons per seating. This area will also double as a “safe haven” component for short occupancy.

RSC has recently completed construction documents and a code review is underway. The firm anticipates bidding the project in early 2006.
