After first providing a through feasibility study which concluded a new library facility was in order, RSC Architects assisted the Town of Ridgefield to design and construct a facility which is the centerpiece of the community.
The architectural team creatively eliminated the need for elevator access to the public facility by using the sloped site to its advantage. The resulting design is a maximized single level, open floor plan accented by decorative exposed brick columns adding a sense of stateliness and importance to the library.
A centralized administration area with an expansive atrium not only minimizes staff requirements, but also acts as the hub which connects the personable and easily identifiable areas of the library.
The new design features a larger children’s area that is separate, yet accessible to the main library and has an adjoining multi-purpose room for program activities. The focal point of the library is the traditional fireplace in the adult reading area which enhances the warm and inviting atmosphere and muted color palette.
A separate meeting room provides space for multi-use that can be used by the public after library hours.
Finally, additional parking was created to accommodate the higher level of traffic to the facility.

New Division A Headquarters in full operation
RSC Architects recently completed this $2.7 million facility, located nearby the Aeroflex Airport in Andover, NJ, to replace the existing Division A Headquarters. The 16,000 s.f. building will serve as the new headquarters for the State of New Jersey Forest Fire and Forest Management Office for the northern region of the state.
The design provides space for administrative offices, central communications and training rooms, as well as an apparatus area for servicing forest fire fighting vehicles. The apparatus area provides for a variety of needs from storage of parts and equipment, to a fabrication bay and vehicle painting booth. Portions of the facility are open to the public, such as an information area, while others are accessible only to forest fire personnel during either normal working hours or for accessing special equipment during emergency calls.
In order to maximize the budget and provide the greatest flexibility of space for the project, both modular and traditional construction techniques were utilized. A pre-engineered structure, providing a clear span of 85 feet at two different heights was used to distinguish the administrative portion of the facility from the apparatus area. Pre-engineered roof and wall components were also used at the apparatus portion of the design where aesthetics were not an issue. Conventional metal stud framing encloses the administrative area which is finished with cultured stone.
RSC Architects has recently completed the state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Institute at Hudson County Community College (HCCC). This new facility accommodates the culinary arts program’s continued growth and provides unparalleled educational opportunities for students. The new Culinary Arts Institute has allowed HCCC to nearly double its program enrollment.
RSC created a carefully phased plan that would allow the existing facility to remain fully operational during construction, and provide a turnkey transition when students returned to classes this past September.
The design of the new five-story Culinary Arts Institute complements the surrounding historical architecture of Journal Square, and includes professional amenities that are every chef’s dream: multiple specialty kitchens with labs, an ice carving studio, a library of antique and rare cookbooks, and a 60-seat fine dining room. “Smart” classrooms offer the latest in wireless technology and design of cooking equipment.
Phase II of the project is now underway to create additional hands-on kitchen and classroom spaces, as well as a 300-seat banquet hall to host high-profile community and business events.
Thanks to successful projects like the Culinary Arts Institute, RSC has proudly earned the designation of on-call architect for Hudson County Community College.

Working with Bergen County, RSC Architects has planned and designed a new 75-bed homeless shelter to be located at the corner of East Kansas and River Streets in Hackensack, NJ. This new 25,000 s.f. facility replaces the existing homeless shelter and helps to alleviate the shortage of shelter beds in the county.
Our firm’s architects rose to the challenge of designing this much-needed facility on an extremely constraining site. The design solution creates a two-story, L-shaped facility that maximizes the area available on the site. This well-conceived design also fulfills the complex programming requirement of keeping the men and women’s areas separated. The new shelter will be constructed on the same site as the existing facility, allowing the existing shelter to continue to function without the loss of beds or services.
RSC Architects’ sensitive design of the new shelter not only complements its surrounding residential and commercial neighborhood, but also creates a welcoming, home-like environment with its warm interior colors and finishes. Upon occupancy of the new facility, the existing shelter will be demolished, making space for staff parking and outdoor and recreational areas for the residents.
Occupants of the new shelter will be housed in cheerful and comforting double rooms. Each floor will also feature bright and open day rooms, administrative and counseling areas. A main dining hall will provide common cafeteria-style food service for up to 140 patrons per seating. This area will also double as a “safe haven” component for short occupancy.
RSC has recently completed construction documents and a code review is underway. The firm anticipates bidding the project in early 2006.

The students at Bergen Academies in Hackensack, NJ are now utilizing two new spaces designed by RSC Architects this school year, an Art Classroom and a Music Classroom.
The art classroom incorporates a variety of work spaces including a display area, a 3-D sculpture space, a graphic design computer station, and a 2-D painting/drawing area. Clean lines define the components, while creative lighting, varying height walls, and soffits offer organization and an open feeling of spaciousness to the complex layout.
A rising curved wall at the entryway immediately draws one into the music classroom's inviting atmosphere. Finished in vibrant colors, the music classroom houses a choral practice area with four levels of risers to emulate the sense of being in front of a large audience. Located at the rear of the space is a small acoustically isolated room with a unique undulating ceiling for a more intimate setting for keyboard study.
